"Innovative Company Heeds Consumer's Call to Arms for Quality Recycled Plastic Products"
BENSENVILLE, IL -War efforts have given consumers an even louder "call to arms" when it comes to looking for renewable energy sources and innovative products that are not petroleum-based. The depletion of raw materials and rise in manufacturing costs have caused an urgent need for alternative sources, particularly in the plastics industry which is heavily dependent upon the volatile petrochemical market. Over the last decade, recycling has become a part of our conservation ethic and a Chicago area company is taking this one step further in developing new products using 100% reclaimed scrap plastics that would otherwise be filling landfills.
Made from everything such as Volkswagen parts, refrigerator door panels, telephones and vacuum cleaners -- to toys, small appliances and pickle pots - these new plastic products are becoming increasing important as America and Illinois manages its waste. According to the American Plastics Council, although 59 percent of all U.S. communities have access to programs that collect plastic waste, products of this type still account for almost ten percent of all municipal solid waste found in landfills across the country. For the past thirteen years, G.A.I.M. Engineering (Glatt Aided Injection Molding) has been committed to recycling and working to develop, create, mold and market high performance products made from 100 percent post-industrial plastics.
According to the American Plastics Council (APC), more than two hundred companies in the U.S. alone process post-industrial scrap plastic today. In the "reclaiming" industry, certain types of discarded plastic products are ground, formed into pellets, melted, dyed, and molded into brand new products. These "recycled" materials, when handled properly, provided a high quality end product for a significantly lower cost than their prime virgin counterparts.
Some materials can be recycled, some can be "cracked" and returned to a chemical, and some can be burned cleanly. By recycling plastic products, companies like G.A.I.M. and its clients are helping to reduce the flow of usable materials to landfills. G.A.I.M. is also reducing dependency on new materials and resins, as well as cutting the environmental side effects of producing them.
"An amazing sixty percent of all plastic products produced in this country are for commercial use. This provides a significant potential source of plastics for recycling, and a virtually endless supply of economical "raw" materials for production," said Skip Glatt, President of GAIM Engineering.
Skip Glatt, President of GAIM Engineering said that not only can recycled plastics benefit industry by drastically reduce manufacturing costs -- as much as 65 percent -- but that consumers can benefit by making a conscious choice in choosing recycled plastic products -- without losing anything in terms of aesthetics and durability. Among the products that GAIM manufacturers for consumers are bar-be-que grill parts, baby furniture, automobile parts, toys, tool handles for home decorating and SPIKES Needle Strips - a 12" long set of plastic spikes used on office and church buildings around the World to deter pigeon roosting.
"Consumers need to know that there are a wide range of durable goods and products available for purchase from 'reclaimed' plastics that are a feasible and attractive option," said Glatt. "The TotaSak is one of our best selling products and is only one of the myriad of high performance products available on the market today."
TotaSaK is a hand-held grip sold for less than $5 that will carry a load of shopping bags, paint cans, or other heavy items - users call it 'the one-trip wonder' as it grips and hauls loads of groceries from the car trunk to kitchen counter. Made from durable, 100% recycled plastic, such as Intake Manifolds from autos; it enables the user to carry up to 1,400 pounds with ease. With uses ranging from carrying grocery, dry cleaning, carting bales of hay and animal feedbags, Pet food/supplies, TotASak is available in Camping World or select ACE Hardware stores, or by contacting 888-TOTASAK or www.totasak.com. The TotaSak product was awarded the Handyman Club of America Member Tested Seal-of-Approval in 2002, and was evaluated in ten areas such as ease of use, quality, design, durability, and effectiveness.
GAIM is participating in community Earth Day events around the state of Illinois, including making approx. 1,500 donations of its Hand-LR Light Weight Version of TotaSak product to the Northbrook Environmental Quality Commission's Earth Event on Saturday, April 26.
Additional products that GAIM has redesigned for industrial use:
n The Light Without Heat wand used for municipalities and the airline industry -- distributed nationally by a local company based in Bensenville, IL
n Docking port and hardware used in the transit/commuter services -- distributed nationally by a local company based in Elk Grove, IL
Based in Bensenville, G.A.I.M.'s claim is "to re-claim" or take second generation "scrap". Develop a polymer, matrix blend compound of engineering grades of plastic, liquefy and mold for durable goods. The company has a long-standing commitment to industrial recycling, long before it became popular. Founded in 1990, G.A.I.M. has manufactured and created durable products for more than 33 different industries, using 100 percent industrial scrap as its feed stock -- materials that stand the test of time and heavy performance requirements (www.gaimengineering.com).
